How Plumbers Rank for Drain Cleaning and Water Heater Searches

Drain cleaning and water heater jobs come from different searches. Here is how a plumbing company builds pages and a profile that rank for both.

Two services, two very different searches

A homeowner with a backed-up basement floor drain and a homeowner whose water heater is 14 years old are not searching the same way. The first person wants someone today and types short, urgent phrases like "drain cleaning near me" or "sewer backup plumber." The second often has a few days to decide and searches longer questions like "tank vs tankless water heater" or "water heater replacement cost Calgary." If one generic services page has to cover both, it usually ranks for neither.

Google tries to match each search to the page that answers it best. So the first job is making sure each of these services has its own clear page with a specific job to do on your site.

Build a dedicated page for each service

Your drain cleaning page should read like the call a customer has with your dispatcher. Your water heater page should read like the conversation at the kitchen table before a quote. Each one needs enough real detail that Google can tell exactly what you do and where you do it.

  • Drain cleaning: list the drains you actually clear (kitchen, main line, floor drains, sewer laterals), the equipment you use such as cable machines, hydro jetting or camera inspection, and whether you offer same-day or after-hours service.
  • Water heaters: cover repair and replacement, the types you install (tank, tankless, gas, electric), brands you service, warranty handling and what happens to the old unit.
  • Both: name the neighbourhoods and towns you cover, show your phone number at the top, and put a short form near the first screen for people who would rather not call.

Avoid copying the same paragraph across pages and swapping the service name. Google treats near-duplicate pages as thin, and homeowners can tell when a page says nothing specific.

Answer the questions people search before they call

Water heater searches especially are full of questions. How long does a tank last? Why is my hot water running out faster? Is the rumbling noise sediment? A short answer section on the page, written in the words homeowners actually use, gives Google more reasons to show you and gives the reader a reason to trust you. Drain pages benefit from the same approach: why drains keep clogging, when a camera inspection is worth it, and what you can safely try before calling.

Keep the answers honest and practical. If minerals in local water shorten tank life or cause buildup, say so in plain terms. If chemical drain cleaners can damage older pipes, explain why. This kind of content is hard for a franchise template to fake, and it is exactly what wins trust.

Set up your Google Business Profile for both jobs

Most urgent drain calls come from the map results, not the regular listings below them. Your Google Business Profile needs "Plumber" as the primary category, then additional categories that match your work where Google offers a fit. Add drain cleaning and water heater services individually in the services section with a short description for each, and link the profile to the matching page on your site rather than only the homepage.

Post photos from real jobs: a cleared main line on camera, a fresh water heater install with tidy venting and a labelled shutoff. Ask customers to mention the service in their review if they are comfortable doing so. A review that says "they cleared our sewer line on a Sunday" helps more than one that just says "great service."

Show Google and homeowners you are local and legitimate

Ranking in Calgary or anywhere in Alberta depends heavily on proof that you are a real local business. Your business name, address and phone number should match everywhere they appear online. Mention your licensing, insurance and whether you handle permits on water heater installs, since homeowners often ask about that before they book. Real staff photos and your truck in front of a local home do more than stock images ever will.

We cover the broader picture of what a plumbing site needs on our plumbing industry page at /industries/plumbing, including how service pages, reviews and fast mobile load times work together. A slow page on a phone loses the drain cleaning caller before your number even loads.

Quick checklist

  • One page per service, each with its own title and heading that names the service and your city.
  • Click-to-call phone number visible without scrolling on mobile.
  • Profile services listed separately and linked to the right pages.
  • Fresh job photos and service-specific reviews added every month.
  • Questions answered in plain language on each page.
